Words: 296

Essay

Giotto di Bendone style of painting is founded on the artistic perspective which had been applied by the ancient Romans and the ancient Greeks. The images which are painted in in Giotto Di Bendone’s Arena Chapel Nativity are perceived from a profile or three quarter profile perspective. The natural approach in Giotto di Bendone’s art supplanted the Byzantine approach to the portrayed world as it could be perceived and demonstrated in art. Many of the early renaissance and mid renaissance painters described Giotto Di Bendone’s style of humanistic portrayal as Gothic (Cowtown Productions, n.d.).

Giotto di Bendone undertook the Arena Chapel endeavour in 1305. The Arena Chapel’s designation was taken from a neighbouring Roman amphitheatre. Many have credited the architectural style of the Arena Chapel to Giotto di Bendone. This is attributed to the characteristic of the interior design of the Arena Chapel coordinating with the artwork. The portrayal of Giotto di Bendone’s Nativity scene is located on the upper floor of the Arena Chapel (Cowtown Productions, n.d.).

Nicola Pisano’s style of marble sculpture was distinct from Giotto di Bendone’s style of painting. The sculpture of the Pisa Baptistery is demonstrated in the following depictions which are positioned on the aspects of the Pisa Baptistery. The sculptural art of Nicola Pisano is distinguished from the paintings of Giotto di Bendone in the aspect that the full face frontal views which portray figures which are dynamically interacting with each other (Cowtown Productions, n.d.).

This perspective is demonstrated on the marble reliefs. Pisano applied Roman artistic design in his depiction of the Pisa Baptistery and the carved marble scenes which are positioned on its aspects. Nicola Pisano’s son Giovanni Pisano followed in his father’s footsteps. The subjects are portrayed as being interconnected, which demonstrates the spirituality of action (Cowtown Productions, n.d.).
