Essay

To: Global Ethics Team

From: Manager

Subject: Global Ethics Team Training

Date: November 27, 2012

Good afternoon team!

I am excited about our corporation’s decision to expand into the global market and implementing this global ethics team. Global ethics is a challenging discipline and it is necessary for us to develop an effective global ethics training program to educate the company’s employees on the issue of ethics in different countries.

Scevola & Partners (2009) points out different cultures have their own sets of ethical values, customs and traditions, and that ethical behavior in international business is important. This is why a global ethics training program is necessary. It will teach professionalism, “ethical behavior, honesty, compliance and integrity” (Scevola & Partners, 2009). This is important to ensure that our company is able to sustain development and growth on a global scale by fostering positive relationships with the global host countries we do business with.

Giacalone (1997) outlines components of a successful ethics training program that begins with 1) providing trainees with judgment philosophies so that they may understand how to make good decisions when dealing with ethical problems that may arise; 2) providing industry/profession-specific information on possible ethical concerns, instead of simply overviewing a broad area, because specific areas have their own ethical issues; 3) providing trainees with what is expected of them as it relates to ethical rules to include ongoing training on expectations instead of just pointing employees to a handbook; 4) helping trainees understand their own ethical values and perspectives; 5) helping trainees see a realistic view of the fact that everything will not go according to textbook guidelines; and 6) giving trainees opportunities to practice what they have learned in ethics training, and then returning to follow-up training sessions to have their questions answered.

Team, we will use the concepts in these components to develop our global ethics training program and implement its key elements to ensure success.
