Globalization, Culture, and Identities in Crisis, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 286

Essay

Leiber and Weisberg’s portrayal of American primacy in determining identity on a global scale is somewhat accurate, although the ability of American culture to have an impact on other societies is contingent upon a variety of factors. In particular, the countries that do not frequently associate with the country are more likely to remain autonomous. This is supported by the idea that English is not frequently spoken in some of these nations, which prevents their need to communicate with America. However, other countries, especially Western European countries have been influenced by America primarily due to enhanced interactions as a result of trade and political affiliations. There are many countries that do not want or require these affiliations, which allow them to remain autonomous.

This is related to the Misa chapter because it discusses that technology is one of the reasons that some nations become dependent on American society. In particular, a variety of sources on the internet are published in English, which requires individuals who wish to access this information to gain an understanding of this language. This is backed up by the fact that many universities across the world have started teaching classes in English despite their mother language. This need to communicate is important, and technology is one of the reasons that English has become the universal language of science and technology. If diverse peoples wish to communicate, it is usually through English due to its prevalence. Since technology has allowed the language to become more common, this trend will likely become more emphasized in the future.
