Great Dialogues of Plato, Research Paper Example

Introduction

Recreating Plato’s ideal society was seen through a perfection of style and an equal knowledge of the world and thoughts incorporating both old and new views in Plato’s Republic. Though his other works the Philebus and Sophist attributed more modern views to metaphysics and the Laws was clearly a distinction of longevity with reflection on the arts, Republic was composed of the same largeness and to life and speculation with connection of politics and philosophy. Plato was described as one of the greatest ancient genius’ using the force of abstract science that was yet to be fully developed at that time. “Socrates and Plato have relied on the sciences of psychology and logic to develop and write the law of contradiction, the fallacies of arguing in a circle, the essence of things or notions and means and ends and causes and conditions.” (“The Republic-Plato”).

It was seen in the Republic the first eccentric forms of great thought invented by Plato. Plato had an innate talent of unveiling truth and logic through metaphysics by which all truth and all existence is possible. The mythical tale told in the Republic is of the war of the Athenians against the Island of Atlantis. There is an apparent struggle for the right to liberty as seen in the writings of Homer that represent the conflict in Persia and Hellas. Plato is further regarded as the leader of Utopia of Sir Thomas More in the Rebulic. “Plato is the father of idealism in philosophy, politics and literature.” (“The Republic-Plato”).

Review of Book Chapters I-IX.

Plato attempts to theorize why men behaved justly in the ten chapters of the Republic whilst examining possibilities of stronger elements of society forcing the weak into submission or self-justice. Further Plato looks into the nature of justice and examines if it is considering a good motivating factor regardless of its consequences? Each respective group in a society including producers, auxiliaries and guardians must act in harmony within a structured body for there to be justice within a society. There is a certain power that accompanies each function within a group and justice requires that each member fulfil their role within society. Plato shows that individual justice is a reflection of political justice. “In every person there possesses a rational and spiritual thoughts of the soul that seeks out the truth, further an appetitive part of the soul that seeks money most of all.” (“The Republic”). In a just society, the honourable part of the soul dominates the appetitive part of the soul and submits to the rulers desires. Plato goes on to explain these philosophies in line with astrology stating that the world is divided into two facets, one realm in which we grasp with our mind and the other which we grasp with our mind. An orange or a flower is part of the realm world where as goodness and beauty is part of the intelligible world of forms. Plato infers that political injustice hampers a man’s psyche and further makes his soul unhealthy. Plato emphasizes that true pleasure is derived from philosophical pleasure ration than rational pleasure. There is a strong connection between intimate life and the intelligible world of forms that support the theory that a just life is a desired state that a person wishes for.

Conclusion

Plato wises for each unique soul to choose its own life without interference from any other predictor. Poetry encourages a reader to indulge in the lifestyle one sympathizes with hence Plato banished all poets from the city he resided in after writing this series to his books.
