Business Ethics: Green Initiatives

Corporations who are environmentally friendly have embraced the concept of “going green” and are those whose strategic plans include green initiatives. This means that these corporations are showing concern for the world’s environment and its future inhabitants. One way corporations are going green is by implementing green, renewable energy systems such as solar, wind or geothermal power. This is also a way for environmentally-conscious corporations to spend more economically and they are even given incentives by the Federal government under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership program (Dolan, 2011).

Additionally, Mathur & Mathur (2000) state going green is a global movement that environmentally-conscious consumers are embracing, and these consumers often make purchasing decisions based on whether or not a company is environmentally friendly. This suggests that many consumers modify their buying behaviors based on purchasing green products and patronizing green businesses because it shows that the businesses are concerned for the environment. Additionally, many companies have a global presence, so incorporating global environmentally friendly strategies is beneficial to an effective overall marketing strategy, and is in a company’s best interest from a marketing standpoint. This means that going green is good for business, the environment and the economy.

Going green is a new concept at my company. We are developing strategies to implement green initiatives in the near future. However, this concept is an important one to the company, not just from an economic view but because the people at my company feel it is important to help preserve this earth and to take whatever steps we can to contribute to the green movement.
