Every college student is given the arduous task of taking and hopefully passing exams in each course of study.  In order to achieve a passing grade, there are several steps that students must take in order to be prepared for the exams.  First of all, each student should take very good notes and review these notes prior to taking each exam.  However, some students are too “knowledgeable” and skip this step.  Many of these students are also the first students to complain about their final grades when they are not a passing grade.  Note taking is a very important skill that is critical to each student’s success.  In addition, a student must complete all of the assigned readings, research, study guides and participate in class discussions.  All of these elements are combined into a cumulative exam.  Professors want to know how much knowledge has been retained, but if these actions are not taken students do not stand a chance of retaining anything.  Instead, students will take one look at the exam and think they are reading something from a foreign language – it will make absolutely no sense.

While each of the previous steps is crucial for a student to pass a college exam, many students fail to perform each task. Perhaps one of the most common reasons is that students are egotistical and believe that these tasks are unnecessary and beneath their collegiate status.  Other students are simply lazy and would rather play video game, chat on Facebook or read the gossip columns on the latest celebrity showdown.  Either way, students must make the effort to cease hindering their own success.  Knowledge is not attained by simply showing up to class and thinking the brain is an informational sponge that will absorb everything it comes in contact with.  Instead, students must make the effort to learn and retain information.  Their study habits, techniques and overall educational behaviors are the most important piece of the puzzle towards successfully completing exams and ultimately earning a college diploma.
