Writing a dissertation can be an overwhelming experience that can be scary, stressful, and can be the ticked to receiving doctoral status. - Set Small Goals, and remember that you are writing five research papers, and not a book. Writing dissertation is a manageable process, so do not scare yourself.
- Avoiding the mistakes common in dissertations by choosing an overly or boring ambitious and broad topic. Choose a topic that has a circumscribed limits and clear focus. Remember to put references for each quotation or evidence mentioned. For each chapter have a clear focus for each overarching issue or question addressed.
- Remember that research can be relevant to writing and directly on the topic. Look to journalist and scholars on how they handle their topics, frame, and structure their arguments, and key phrases.
- Brainstorm your ideas and then organize.
- Importantly, write when you do not want to. Even when you do not feel like it, write. Whatever you do, do not stop writing. Write down ideas, work on the literature review, analyze some evidence, work on the introduction, or spell out the argument in the chapter.
- Learn to be selfish, forget the obligations and responsibilities, and compartmentalize.
