Writing a dissertation can be an overwhelming experience that can be scary, stressful, and can be the ticked to receiving doctoral status. The in completing the dissertation, the biggest obstacle is psychological, and involves far more willpower and perseverance than every expected. Writing a dissertation first means to write about a topic that you are passionate and doable.   • Set Small Goals, and remember that you are writing five research papers, and not a book. Writing dissertation is a manageable process, so do not scare yourself.
  • Avoiding the mistakes common in dissertations by choosing an overly or boring ambitious and broad topic. Choose a topic that has a circumscribed limits and clear focus. Remember to put references for each quotation or evidence mentioned. For each chapter have a clear focus for each overarching issue or question addressed.
  • Remember that research can be relevant to writing and directly on the topic. Look to journalist and scholars on how they handle their topics, frame, and structure their arguments, and key phrases.
  • Brainstorm your ideas and then organize.
  • Importantly, write when you do not want to. Even when you do not feel like it, write. Whatever you do, do not stop writing. Write down ideas, work on the literature review, analyze some evidence, work on the introduction, or spell out the argument in the chapter.
  • Learn to be selfish, forget the obligations and responsibilities, and compartmentalize.
  • Find someone that can be a soundboard for the dissertation, because it is a social and dialogic activity. This person can help the writing be more compelling, logical, and sophisticated.

  • A dissertation’s argument must grab the reader’s attention, challenges a population interpretation, enters a debate, corrects a misconception, and debunks a myth.
  • Take to heart that each first draft is a disaster, but getting the work on paper is the first step in getting the mentor to help polish the dissertation together.
  • More importantly, do what is right for you. Then you are able to be successful, in which these skills will be useful throughout your doctoral career.
