Essay

What interests you about the HACU National Internship Program?

I had set a goal for myself to acquire an internship in the year 2019, such that I can attain unique insights in my field of study as well as network with many people from different parts of the country.  The HACU is further a renowned internship program thus although, I am going to a small university, I would have a unique chance of getting an internship from a big organization. I am further interested in learning, growing professionally and overall as an individual. Since at the moment I don’t have marketable skills and don’t go to a big university I believe the HACU internship will propel me further in my professional and personal life.

How will the HACU National Internship Program enhance your academic and career goals?

I expect to learn a lot when I get into the HACU program and believe it’s an invaluable chance to acquire hands on experience. My current academic goal is to graduate with an accounting degree with a GPA of 3.80 or above. My career goal is to get the CPA certification, and get accounting experience. In the contemporary world which is very competitive, having good experience from a reputable company before my graduation will make me appealing to potential employers. It will further put me ahead in the competitive world thus increasing my chances of being absorbed in different companies.

What role do you see public service playing in your professional and personal life?

Public service has played a great role in my professional and personal life since I have numerously volunteered and I believe the experience is worth noting. I spent some months working in over nine organizations example being Rio Texas, AARP, VITA (IRS) among others. From this experience I have increased my ability to network as I have interacted with many individuals ranging from fellow workers to customers. Additionally, I have found happiness in helping others, for example as an overnight associate I had the opportunity to receive calls and feed customers’ information on products and services. I found this experiencing fulfilling and attained happiness within myself.  The volunteering further enhanced my professional life as it instilled in me the ability to plan and initiate cause of action.

Given your work experiences, what skills do you bring to the HACU National Internship Program, and what skills are you looking to further develop?

I believe working with people from different backgrounds has helped me to look at a problem in different perspectives. For example, individuals having a Hispanic background favored teamwork in solving a problem, while White Americans tend to pursue problems individually. All these methods have own advantages and I have learnt all of them during my volunteering and work experience.  I thus possess problem solving skills which I bring to the HACU program. Another skill I bring to HACU is good customer service which I learnt during my experience as a sales associate, where I handled different customers by helping them log in to their accounts where they had difficulty doing so.  I also learned that being bilingual like I am is crucial especially when living in diverse community like I do. My ability to speak Spanish and English has enabled me go along with the individuals.

During my internship, I would like to learn three critical skills which are, communication, leadership and critical thinking skills. I want to have the ability to perfectly communicate with individuals in a more professional and understandable manner. I also see the need to focus on leadership skills so as to motivate other people and lastly develop critical thinking skills. With the critical thinking skills, I’ll have the ability to see a step ahead and make decisions faster thus staying ahead in the competitive world.
