Overview

There are many resources for parent of school age children in District 21 of New York City. Parents who may have concerns with academics, counseling or health options have resources available. Using the accessible resources and benefiting from the high quality learning environment will follow students throughout life. The school system and organizations in the community provide and support programs to develop a rich and rewarding experience for students.

Academic Intervention

‘Contracts for Excellence’ is a program which supports six concerns within the school system. Class size reduction, ‘time on task’ an intervention service, ‘teacher and principal quality initiatives’ or professional development internally and externally, middle and high school restructuring, full day pre-kindergarten classes and ‘model programs for English language learners’ a dual language or bilingual program. This program funds students with educational and academic needs such as learning disabilities, low achievement risks and students in poverty. Parents who feel their child needs academic intervention and do not qualify for Contracts for Excellence funding can research tutoring services available through the school and private organizations. Contact the school your child is enrolled for details available for the tutoring option best suited for the needs of your child. District 21 follows ‘No Child Left Behind Act’ and provides free tutoring to struggling students.

Guidance and Counseling Services

The school system provides guidance and counseling to students; providing educational and emotional support. Personal counseling as well as planning for college is a service available to students.  The teachers and guidance counselors work within the school and in collaboration with outside private organizations to address the needs of students on an individual basis. Parents interested in learning more should contact their children’s school and speak with the principal or guidance counselor. Health

The New York City Department of Education works with the Office of School Health to provide health services to students such as health centers at school sites, vision and hearing tests, medical insurance and school nurses. This organization reviews immunization compliance and medical requirements for new enrollees or students transferring schools. Automated student health records are available to the schools to keep track of students who transfer and keep continuity for student health concerns for special needs. The District follows a wellness policy for students to help teach fitness and wellness.
