Harry and Sally, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 289

Essay

Who do you let go and why?
I have to let Sally go; while both are competent workers who are loyal to the company, Harry has been working for the company longer, and has earned a consistent amount of savings each year. While Sally is more of a personal friend of mine, Harry has a large family and obligations that mean he needs the consistent income much more than Sally. There are more people that are financially dependent on him than Sally.

How do you let them know they will no longer have a job with your company?

I will call Sally into my office and calmly explain the situation. I will make sure to let her know the circumstances that led to her firing, and that it is not a personal decision. It was a difficult decision to make, but someone has to go; it is not reflective of poor performance on her part, we simply cannot afford to maintain her on the payroll (Steingold&Repa, 1999).

What steps do you take so you feel good about your decision?

In order to feel better about letting Sally go, I can respect her wishes regarding how to proceed with our social relationship. If she takes the firing personally and cuts me off from being friends, I have to respect that. Meanwhile, I can sleep soundly knowing that the more senior employee, who saves a consistently high amount (likely more than Sally did) for the company, and who has a family that needs his income, still has his job intact. The financial dire straits that Harry would be in upon firing him would be much more difficult than Sally’s.
