Essay

Total quality management (TQM) is an effort by an organization aimed at improving quality in every stage of its production (Oakland, 2003). Hartman industries, LLC is a company that specializes in plastic injection molding. To continue to be a market leader in this field of business, the company can apply the principles of TQM in order to improve on precision, growth and quality.

TQM needs the following requirements in order to meet its desired purpose. One of them is conforming to the specifications of the designers. Specifications include measurement of dimension, which can be determined by measurement, but it does not have any relationship to the customer’s concept of quality.

Another requirement is the fitness of the product for the desired use. It deals with how a product meets its desired purpose. Hartman industries can take advantage of this requirement and design products that specifically meet their intended use; this reduces wastage of time and resources in producing products that do not meet the needs of specific users (Oakland, 2003).

Producing goods that meet the value of the price paid is useful in meeting the usefulness of a product to clients. Clients will always pay for a product or service that is lower in price and at the same time meets their intended use.

Support service is another requirement of TQM in that it determines the judgment of product quality. The quality of a product extends beyond the product, but it also encompasses the people, processes and the organizational surrounding associated with it. The quality of Hartman products is not judged by the quality of the product, but also by the effectiveness and precision of producing it. Psychological criterion is a requirement that focuses on the judgmental evaluation on what comprise product quality. One of them is the identified reputation of the product.

TQM will benefit Hartman in the following ways. One of them is meeting productivity and effective processing by removing obstacles to work processes and systems. TQM focuses on challenges that comprise errors during processes, repetitive actions, wasteful assignments and unneeded processes. It helps in predicting and avoiding such errors and unprofitable processes.

TQM is a major cost saving strategy in terms of cost of production and time. it removes unnecessary and duplicate work, eliminates wasteful spending and poor quality products that can be rejected, minimizes repairs and repetitive work, minimizes warranty and expenditure on customer support, and due to increase in efficiency, it raises the profit for each product (Oakland, 2003). In terms of time management, TQM eliminates time mismanagement, and this helps management to concentrate on increasing production, designing new products and refining existing ones.

Another major benefit of TQM to Hartman industries is meeting customer satisfaction. This is because the core purpose of TQM is improving quality of products and coming up with the best strategies of meeting the quality of a product that satisfies the needs of clients. It improves customer satisfaction in the following ways: eliminates waiting time by altering the mode of engagement scheduling, changing the delivery process to facilitate faster and effective delivery of products and quality products that demand no warranty or repairs hence maintaining client loyalty (Oakland, 2003).

TQM also plays a role in organizational development in that it brings changes to the work ethic by enlightening employees on the importance of quality and making it the responsibility of all of them. This results in a work environment that aims at eliminating mistakes instead of correcting them.
