Pages: 1

Words: 265

Essay

Introduction

As several of the below reviewed articles confirm, suicide is one of the greatest public health concerns in the Western world. It is also worrying that it is a major contributor to child deaths in the United States. Related literature has proven that the only effective approach to reduce the number of fatalities due to suicide is introducing effective mental health screening and education programs targeting the most vulnerable populations.

Research focus

The author would like to review public health programs related to suicide prevention, examining latest reports and studies that focus on effectiveness, impact, and framework analysis. The selected primary research studies are focusing on different educational and intervention programs used in high schools, online, and military settings. One of them evaluates patients’ perception of the effectiveness of the program, while one examines demographic variables that are relevant to developing frameworks to prevent suicide.

The main purpose of the study is to determine the most effective programs’ common features and create a framework for developing future public health intervention methods that can create the best possible patient outcome.

While various online, school-based, and community mental health programs exist in the United States and worldwide to reduce the risk factors that lead to suicidal attempts, their impact on public health outcomes has not been thoroughly examined yet. In order to create a framework that can be used to standardize education, screening, and intervention programs, there is a need for a detailed review of components and their individual effectiveness. The author of the research is attempting to complete this review to support policy-makers create more effective suicide prevention programs.
