This case narrative conveys the importance of meeting the required competencies for doctoral-level students relative to direct patient care. There is a significant emphasis placed upon prior research and clinical evidence in the development of a strategy to support the patient’s diagnosis and plan of care, as well as enabling the patient to experience much-needed support and guidance to influence his health status. The case narrative is comprehensive and meets some of the selected competencies of a doctoral-level analysis. Most importantly, a detailed analysis of the patient’s medical history and current health status are provided, and these support a greater understanding of the patient’s overall needs and plan of care. It is the responsibility of a doctoral-level nurse to develop advanced knowledge and utilize resources to develop strategies to support patient needs, particularly when diagnoses such as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are complex and multifaceted (Chism, 2015).

The case narrative also demonstrates that the student has evaluated a number of different components of the patient’s overall medical health status and is able to determine that there are significant needs that must be met at the comprehensive and multidisciplinary levels. However, additional considerations must be made with respect to evidence-based practice and the development of new methods to support patient wellbeing that will also facilitate collaboration and quality of life for this patient (Melnyk, Gallagher-Ford, Long, & Fineout-Overholt, 2014). Most importantly, the case analysis emphasizes many of the important clinical requirements of this patient, but as there is room to improve the patient’s health status, a comprehensive plan of care would benefit from additional research that will further support nursing perspectives at the advanced practice level. It is imperative that the student is not only able to meet specific doctoral-level competencies, but to also apply them to additional areas of need that will positively impact healthcare outcomes for this patient.
