The case narrative evaluates a patient with atrial fibrillation and offers a detailed summary of her condition and overall health status. The student has identified several domains and competency areas and has described them in detail in order to identify critical areas of focus that require further analysis and investigation. To be specific, an emphasis on patient needs relative to key demographics and a genetic profile are critical to the identification of a comprehensive diagnosis and plan of care to provide the patient with much-needed clinical support and guidance throughout the course of treatment. For this case narrative, health promotion is also critical and conveys the importance of shaping an environment where care and treatment will be optimized through the chosen nursing-based intervention and the appropriate coordination of the plan of care.

The case narrative also describes the importance of comprehensive care and treatment for a patient with a chronic illness, as this reflects a need to examine doctoral-level principles to ensure that all patient-related outcomes are achieved in a timely manner so as not to disrupt quality of life (Chism, 2015). At the same time, the case narrative must convey the importance of shaping an environment where this patient will achieve the necessary level of care at the highest possible standards, while also examining prior evidence-based research to achieve fiscal responsibility and efficiency in this regard (Melnyk, Gallagher-Ford, Long, & Fineout-Overholt, 2014). These considerations require nurses and the healthcare team as a whole to examine the different constructs of care and to determine the needs of this patient on a comprehensive level, level knowledge and expertise that are of critical importance in order to ensure that the patient is able to achieve optimal quality of life through the selected care and treatment plan that will best meet her needs. The case narrative achieves many of these principles, but there is room for improvement in determining how to best meet the needs of this patient of advanced age.
