Hellenistic Civilization, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 294

Essay

Although there was a wide range of diversity throughout the Hellenistic world, the underlying cultural awareness was essentially Greek-like.  This includes the basis of Greek political and social values within the areas that were conquered.  Not only Greek language, but basic Greek sentimentalities were established in the underlying cultural structures throughout the Hellenistic world at the time.  The developments within these civilizations including the establishment of Greek values through the conquests of various areas as well as the subsequent Greek immigration into the conquered areas created an underlying development within these areas that had essentially Greek characteristics.

This is primarily due to the fact that the Hellenistic world was essentially established through the conquests of Alexander the Great, a Greek. “The military campaign of Alexander against other countries caused essential changes in the civilizations of the ancient world (Malekzadeh, 2013 p. 615).”  Although there was not a single unified ruler within the Hellenistic world, the establishment of Greek thinking schools within the conquered areas created an environment that allowed Greek ideas to thrive even among territories that were no longer under direct Greek control.

The influx of Greek citizens into the areas that were established within the political sphere of Alexander and his Generals created an inherent need to present Greek values.  “The artists emigrated from Greece or other points of the Hellenistic world had to satisfy their Greek customers” (Malekzadeh 2013, p. 617).  This need created an influence on the underlying cultural and political associations that were created within the social structures of the Hellenistic world.  These associations had a profound impact on the underlying Greek-like attributes of these cities at the time.
