How Change Happens Through Self Talk, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 424

Essay

Persuasion is an important aspect of communication that is used by at least 65% of the people in the society when they tend to complete assigned tasks in their jobs. Others used the element of persuasion in dealing with family and friends in the hope of influencing the thoughts and decisions they are making in their lives. As for my part, I realized that self talk is one particular process to make sure that what one sends out as a message to another would be as persuasive as expected. At the same time, allowing the one being advised to undergo a particular time dedicated to self-talk would work best in attaining the best decision that could respond to the current situation one is supposed to deal with. Self-talk is basically the process by which one tends to argue with himself; a sense of defining the process of self-examination. Basically each person has an idea on what is right and what is wrong. However, when particular situations arise, it is often hard to be as objective as necessary. Instead, many fall into the option of picking the easiest and most comfortable choice available. This is where a more balanced view of the situation needs to come into the picture.

I was able to take such a role in the life of my friend who was then experiencing a particularly hard and confusing situation. She was only 16 when she got pregnant and she wanted to have an abortion. Not wanting to tell her parents of the situation for fear that she might disappoint them. At first, I was confused as well, I had to talk to myself, to give my self some time to see things more clearly and understand my friend’s situation as if putting myself into her shoe. After doing so, I tried talking her out of her decision of aborting the child. Using particular issues such as respect of life and the ethical and moral weight that abortion has on her being, I was able to convince her that abortion was not the right decision to pick. Now her child is already four years old and that child became the source of strength that my friend needed to get through every single day. Self-talk on her part worked well as it did provide her the time to think things through, to reason out with herself and see the situation at a much better light. This proves that when making a particular decision, self-talk is often helpful in the hope of establishing one’s conviction.
