Essay

How do you view teamwork? What are the advantages and disadvantages of collaborative writing? What type of collaborative writing have you done during your professional and/or academic career?

I define teamwork as a process of sharing thoughts and ideas with team members and working collaboratively. The ability of the team to accomplish its project depends upon the contributions of team members as well as their working relationship. However, collaborative writing only yields benefits when team members can exchange ideas and thoughts with each other, know how to communicate with each other, know how to cooperate towards project goals, and can efficiently share tasks. But at the same time there may also be certain disadvantages of collaborative writing. First of all, it is challenging to divide tasks among team members. The challenges may arise if the task is either too easy or too difficult or team members may have different opinions as to which path to take. In addition, the progress may suffer if some team members do not finish their assigned tasks on time.

I do not have any experience in collaborative writing in a business environment so far but I have worked on academic projects as a team member. Working as part of a team usually involves discussions and division of tasks among members. Once the members have finished their assigned tasks, they send their respective parts to other team members for review through email. These experiences have taught me that communication is extremely important in team environment. I have also learnt that collaborative writing often yields better results than individual projects.
