Essay

A good correctional leader needs to have significant knowledge in analyzing the problem and deciding the course of action. This is because the leader is mandated to ensure the interest of offenders, the community, and victims are well balanced. The most significant example of a correctional leader is a prison superintended whose obligation according to law is to ensure correctional facilities are well managed. Thus, looking at the mandate of the correctional leader, it is good for them to maintain working relationships between stakeholders in criminal corrections (Baruah, 2021).

From the studies of several journals, it has been indicated that in criminal justice professionals, leaders, and other correctional managers best way to maintain a working relationship is considering the implementation of policy that meets the needs and interests of both stakeholders. For instance, in correctional facilities, a common conflict arises between inmates and correctional officers. Thus, for the correctional leader to maintain a good relationship, they should balance the interest of correctional officers by informing them that their mandate is ensuring that inmates are well taken care of. Also, to maintain a good relationship, both stakeholders should be explained the rationale of the policy as that will help maintain a relationship between police officers and inmates (Gary Cornelius, 2018). Another way of maintaining a good working relationship as a correctional leader is to have great communicational relationships and conflict resolution skills (Gerard, 2012). For example, in case of increased insecurity cases in the facility, the correctional officers will need to impose more authority on inmates. This means the correctional leader will need to communicate effectively to other stakeholders’ reason for heightened security is for their protection from inmates who were observed to be violent and dangerous. Also, they need to ensure that every stakeholder is committed to upholding applicable laws that do not violate inmates’ rights.
