How I Met My Wife, Essay Example

Essay

One family tradition that I have enjoyed with my parents is that we always got to visit my grandparents in Lynchburg, Virginia each summer. We had been making the trip ever since I was two years old. However, last summer the family tradition was broken because my grandparents, who have retired, had decided to move to Florida in one of its many retirement communities. So, instead of going to Virginia, we went to Miami, Florida instead. The scenery was beautiful. A nice cool breeze was constantly blowing. I must admit that I wasn’t very excited about spending the summer in Florida. Over the years, I had made friends with people in Virginia. So, every year I would spend time with those friends. We all looked forward to that. However, this was my final summer before I went off to college. I had accepted a full scholarship to a college in Virginia. My logic behind that was that I could still have a home away from home. I could go to my grandparents for home cooked meals and do my laundry. I figured I wouldn’t get home sick because I had my whole network of friends and family already in Virginia. So, I was kind of disappointed that my grandparents had moved. Nonetheless, I was looking at the bright side of things because I still had my friends.

When we arrived to my grandparents, the neighborhood was a typical retirement village. The yards and flowers were well maintained because retired people had a lot of free time to work in their yards. My grandparents used gardening as a form of exercise. The first night there, things were quiet-the way you expected a retirement neighborhood to be. I asked my grandparents if there were any children my age in the neighborhood. My grandmother named several couples whose grandchildren were coming to visit. Most of them were coming late in the summer. She told me about the downtown area and places I could go to hang out with people my age.

The next morning I woke up early to the aroma of bacon frying. My mouth began to water thinking about what a great cook my grandmother was. I quickly dressed and went down to the kitchen to eat that delicious breakfast granny had prepared. When I arrive in the kitchen, there was someone else sitting at the kitchen table. Her back was turned, so I could not determine who she was. I immediately noticed that she had beautiful brown hair. It was naturally curly and hung over the back of the chair. I stopped cold in my tracks. My grandmother said, “Come on in, there is someone I want you to meet”. The girl turned around and looked directly at me. My grandmother went on to tell me that Samantha has been living with her grandparents all year. She was originally from Kansas and her parents had been killed in a car accident. She took my breath away. She was gorgeous! Grandmother said she had forgotten to mention her last night, and besides she was a couple of years older than me. She was a sophomore at a college in Florida. Granny said she called her this morning to take me around down town. Finally, she stood up an extended her hand for me to shake.

I sat at the table wanting to eat breakfast, but I was too shame to eat in front of such a pretty, older woman. Granny fixed both of us a nice plate. Samantha had no problems eating her breakfast, so I ate mine too. We exchanged small talk about school and future plans. She named some places we could go and some activities we could do. I didn’t hear any of them. I was just looking at her. After breakfast, she suggested that we go to the beach first. She said there was taco stand near there that has the best food. So, we could spend a few hours at the beach and grab lunch at the taco stand. It all sounded great to me because it meant spending time with her.

We walked back up the street to her grandparent’s house to get her car. The car was a candy apple red Nissan. We rode to the beach almost in silence. The radio was low and the car’s air conditioner was blowing a cool breeze. She asked me where I was from and if I had ever been to Florida before. I told her that I grew up in Massachusetts and had never been to Florida before. In my mind I was thinking that I loved Florida already. It was a beautiful day. The temperature was about 80 degrees. As we came close to the beach, she insisted that I roll my window down. She turned the air and radio off. She explained that she loved to hear and smell the beach. She said that sometimes she sits out at the beach for hours just watching the waves come in to shore and go back out to sea again. We parked and walked down to the beach. The sand was white as salt and the water was a blue green mixture. We sat on the beach talking about life, the future, and what the meaning of true happiness was.

I asked her what she was majoring in at the university she attended. She explained that she wanted to become a nurse because she loves helping people. She became a little teary eyed when she recounted losing her parents a little over a year ago. She explained how nice the hospital nurses had been to her when they arrived there. She said she always looked at the bright side of everything. Had her parents not been killed in the car accident, she never would have wanted to become a nurse. The fact that I wanted to become an accountant seemed obsolete compared to what she wanted to become and why. So, when she asked my about what I wanted to major in I told her I was undecided. We sat in the sand until the sun went down. We talked all day and every day for the entire summer.  By the end of the day, I knew she was for me. She had to be my wife.

By the end of the summer, we were in a relationship. When I went back home at the end of the summer, I felt empty as if something was missing from my life. I decided to go to college in Florida so I could be near her. I lived with my grandparents instead of on campus. We continued to talk and go to the beach every day. She graduated from college and began working at a local hospital in the ER. I graduated too. I am now working as an accountant for local cooperation. We got married the June following my graduation. We live in neighborhood not too far from my grandparents. Although many years have passed, it seems like yesterday. I still feel like she is the most beautiful woman on earth. However, more importantly, she is the kindest, most caring person I have ever met.
