Apart from the elements of the social mask, as the latter is referred to in literature and sociology, Mark Twain focusses the attention of the reader’s attention towards the theme of vengeance. The author uses different character roles to enhance various aspects of the urge to revenge.

Amid an environment in which the women have been defined in a limited measure compared to the men, the women usually act so they can fit into the society’s definition of the roles of a woman. Kate Wilsons just like any other women in Boyhood province position has a general aura to which the community around her have located. The roles allocated to them is limited; for example, they are described as provocative and irresistibly entertaining to the men in the community. The women, cases of Kate Wilson and Thomas Furlong behave like it is fine being in their perceived position, but deep within, they feel the urge to revolt their positions and revenge the responsibility rejection they experience.
