How the U.S. Became a World Power between 1890-1974, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 267

Essay

One of the reasons U.S. started becoming a global economic power was its huge geographical size as well as an increase in commerce among states by the end of the 19th century. Laws were passed to curb the influence of monopolies as well as promote fair competition which allowed some businesses to prosper. In addition, U.S. became a major producer of some of the most valuable commodities and products such as oil, steel, and automobiles. Similarly, U.S. role in WWI also helped establish it as one of the major military powers.

The U.S. also benefitted from the WWII which destroyed the economies of most of Europe but America mostly survived the destruction. In addition, government’s actions during the Great Depression such as infrastructure and industrial investments also started bearing fruits. Thus, not only Americans’ quality of life grew at home but America also became a major exporter to the world as well as a major partner of many European countries who sought America’s help in rebuilding their respective economies. The victory of allied forces during WWII once again reaffirmed America as a major military force in the world.

After WWII, America also started playing greater role in geopolitical affairs which was a reversal of its strategy prior to WWII. In fact, America might not have entered WWII were it not for Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor. The U.S. also played an important role in the creation of U.N. whose headquarter stands in New York City. Similarly, America’s decisive victory over Japan as well as its development of nuclear weapons also helped establish its military superiority in the global arena.
