Introduction

The flu is a virus which affects the respiratory tract. Symptoms of the flu may include a combination of the following high fever, blocking, vomiting, queasiness, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, or coughing. Catching the flu can be one of the most inconveniencing experiences in a person’s normal life.

If diagnosed, the effects of the symptoms of flu can be reduced and the severity of the illness reduced by taking a prescription drug known as Tamiflu. This is prescribed by the doctor after performing a nasal swab in office to verify the diagnosis of influenza. If the confirmation is positive, the patient takes the drug to assist in reduction of the symptom severity.

Anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen also assist in the reduction of fever and minimize the severity of the body aches. Though the drugs might fail to shorten the course of the symptoms, they assist in reduction of aches. Tylenol is used in cases where anti-inflammatories as a result of stomach irritations. Tylenol is less effective as compared to anti-inflammatories but is effective in patients with stomach ulcers or bleeding.

Taking a lot of fluids is another remedy for flu symptoms. The body aches and pains resulting from influenza are worsened by dehydration. It is thus necessary to drink fluids even when the person is not thirsty since a lot of water is lost through sweating as a result of the high fever. Drinks like water, orange juice and sports drinks are recommended. These are important in maintaining the vitamin c levels and the body electrolytes which significant in strengthening the body in counteracting flu symptoms.

Getting plenty of rest especially bed rest assists in reduction of the effects of flu symptoms. Bed rest prevents the transmission of the symptoms to others and also helps the immune system to fight off the infections.
