How to Knit, Essay Example

Learning something that’s hands on isn’t something that can be learned easily from a worksheet. It’s very visual, and something that’s visual needs to be taught through hands on-so, videos are better to use. When something as complex as knitting is being taught I think that both videos and having a teacher show you how to knit is best. In fact, of the two, it’s better to have someone sitting beside you teaching you, than to watch a video. Of the videos the teacher gave the class, the one “How to Knit: A Complete Introduction for Beginners” was very complicated to follow. I don’t think the teacher focused on easy knits, nor how to do an easy cast on (which is done with your fingers and not with the needles). This is something that would have behooved her to do since the video is geared toward beginners. In this vein, she shouldn’t have introduced circular needles as that’s for a more advanced knitter. She should have also said that thicker yarn is easier for a beginner, because they don’t tend to overly tighten thicker yarn, but she didn’t talk about any of this. She was also very dry in her personality; it didn’t seem like she was having fun.

In “How to Knit: Absolute Beginner Knitting Lesson” the woman had a better personality, and taught the lesson simply. She described the yarn, and why she uses it and why (wool yarn); and she discussed how to use the needles and why she uses that particular size. She really did a step-by-step (stating how much yarn to do a slip knot (15 inches) and how to manipulate the needle). Also, the way she casted on was way easier than the first lady. I think in general this video was easier and more geared toward beginners and is the next best thing next to having someone sit beside you teaching you how to knit.
