Essay

It is normal and very common for people to want what they do not have or better still, what they will never have. People who were born with long ears tend to desire short ones, tall people want to be short and people with dark pigmented skins want lighter complexion of the skin. Everyone has their own idea of perfection thus the reason for different preferences. This is evident by many people who result to plastic surgery and other permanent ways to alter the body.

Dark pigmentation of the skin can be caused by different things which may include skin disorders, hereditary, sun rays or even hyper pigmentation. Some of the examples of skin disorders that have been known to cause darkening of the skin are pimples or even Lichen Simplex Chronicus which leave the skin with dark spots or patches. It could also be hereditary where the genes are passed through generations while sun rays cause the skin to produce more melanin which acts as a protection mechanism against the ultraviolet rays that try to penetrate the skin. Hyper pigmentation is a condition where there is too much production of the pigment melanin which causes darkening of the skin.

To curb this common problem, people use different methods which may be home or natural remedies and medicinal remedies. Most home remedies range from citrus fruits like the lemon or orange to vegetables like tomato or potato which are used to make a paste while mixed with gram flour, curd, turmeric powder, honey or oatmeal. Other natural ways to lighten the skin tone would be by exfoliating once a week, use of sunscreen and the use of licorice extract. Over the counter drugs are also used in skin lightening and people have even advanced to cosmetic surgery which can be done by the use of either chemical peels or dermabrasions. All the above methods are used in attempt to solve this one problem, ‘lightening the skin complexion’.
