Pages: 1

Words: 337

Essay

It is very important for a pet owner to have his or her pet spayed or neutered. This a good measure taken on the pets in order to avoid pets’ overpopulation and also contribute to good health and the pet’s general well being. Spay also known as ovariohysterectomy is the removal of the ovaries from a female pet while neuter is also known as castration in male pet.

Steps Involved In Spaying and Neutering

A pet owner needs to ask the veterinarian the right age, the required vaccinations and the health care issues in connection to pet adoption. Spaying and neutering depends with type, age and sex of pet. Surgery can be performed as early as six to twelve months of age. The prices of the surgery should be thoroughly researched by comparing different veterinarians. One should ask about the pre-operative and post operative care in order to know how much one needs to pay for the whole process. The first step involves an appointment with the clinic to ensure that pre-operative care is taken care of. Then after a recommended time, take the pet for the surgery in the veterinary clinic. After the surgery has been complicated, some veterinary clinics allow a pet owner to take the pet home while others keep the pet over night to monitor their recovery progress. When a pet owner takes the pet home, a person is given some information on the post-operative care which is to be applied to the recovering pet and some prescribed pain relief drugs for the pet. A person is advised to call the clinic and update them on the pet’s progress and also in cases where there are: discharge, swelling, complications such as vomiting or not eating. A pet owner should lastly schedule an appointment with veterinarian for suture removal and also a follow-up exam on the pet. Spaying a cat or dog after her first heat will greatly decrease the risk of the pet getting breast cancer. The benefits of the surgery overshadow the risk involved.
