How To Recognize Attention Deficit Disorder, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 325

Essay

Attention Deficit Disorder, or its more common name, ADD, is a group of symptoms and characteristics which will affect an individual’s ability to focus on different tasks for extended periods of time. Also, mood swings and other changes are possible, depending on the severity of the disease. Attention Deficit Disorder has been diagnosed in adults and is now more frequently being diagnosed in children as the scientific community learns more about the reasons behind this illness and the methods by which to treat it.

For the most part, children under the age of twelve who are diagnosed with this condition will not have the ability to focus or concentrate on things. This, in turn, will affect the functions of their daily routine due to the fact most of them will have a problem being able to perform school assignments in a timely manner. Because of this reason, children are often in trouble with their parents and teachers, although many times this is actually how the ADD is noticed, so essentially being in trouble due to not being able to focus on schoolwork in the initial phases of the disorder might be a positive thing and lead to treatment much faster than if no one noticed a problem at all.

If, after the ADD symptoms of being unfocused, restless, unwilling to pay attention, not listening, and “showing out” are not taken care of up front are not dealt with in a positive manner, this can have lasting consequences on the child as far as self-esteem and the ability to interact in future relationships both in the school and work atmosphere.

The good news for sufferers for ADD is that there are many medications on the market now, as well as different types of psychological therapy. If the child can be caught in the beginning stages, help can be sought, and positive outcomes are much more likely to come from this than if the condition goes undetected for many years.
