Essay

Memo

For this assignment, I chose the first topic and will decide how to use Wayne K. Newton’s $100,000 donation to benefit student social life on campus. It is important to address this topic because the students have many needs that are not met on campus. Enhancing student social life will allow students to meet more people on campus, which will ultimately increase their satisfaction of college life. These activities will contribute to decreased stress and new social associations may enhance the success of study groups.

In order to achieve this project, it is important to deliver a survey to the students to determine how they believe the campus could be improved. After these surveys are collected, they will be reviewed to determine the main concerns that a majority of students have on campus. Additional research that will be done will be to determine the most cost effective options for each purchase in this project. By doing so, we will be able to offer the university students the best social experiences possible.

The students would benefit by having an area where they could congregate that could be used for many purposes. During the day, it could be used for studying and small gatherings. In the evening, it could be booked for club events that are open to the entire student body or used for concerts or other fun activities organized by students. Ultimately, it will provide an additional place that students can use to socialize, which will also enhance their ability to study. While there are similar places on campus available for this purpose, a renovation of an already existing space that is not used would enhance student campus satisfaction.

Social Media

When students and employees use social media, it is important for them to consider who is reading what is posted. If messages made publicly available are negative, they could potentially damage the reputation of the individual that posted them. Therefore, it is essential to recognize that it is important to either keep social media profiles private or to limit the people that are able to access this information. However, the types of problems that students and employees can encounter by posting on social media differ. If students post images of them participating in illegal activities, employers will be less likely to hire them after graduation. If employees post negative or sensitive information about their company, they can be fired. Thus, it is important to carefully consider what is added to the internet.

In the modern age, students and professionals need to be aware that their online presence acts as a record that follows them wherever they go. It is nearly impossible to remove online content once it has been posted because this information is backed up on other sites. Therefore, it is important to think about what is being posted and how people could react to it before this is done. If anyone would be offended or bothered by the material, its best to keep offline. Students and professionals need to be aware of the social media presence because employers do search for social media profiles to supplement resumes and interviews when making a decision. Less serious individuals are less likely to be hired.

It is also important to emphasize that students and employees need to know how to use social media because these skills are typically used on the job. According to chapter 22, it is “important to provide good content without saying too much” (Markel, 2012). This is the case for both personal social media and the use of social media in the work place. In both instances it is better to not overshare, but to provide information that others find enjoyable or useful.
