Humility in Person’s Career, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 312

Essay

As a civil engineer, it is important for me to be confident in my abilities so that I can make calculations and enact decisions that will benefit society. However, it is also important to face humility to ensure that the job is done correctly. Because my specialty requires me to apply precise detail to my work, it is important that I do not get distracted by the acclaim that typically comes with the position and ensure that all my work is done with constant skill and an appreciation for continued learning. Furthermore, it is necessary for me to apply my expertise to benefit others to ensure that civil engineering students are able to learn the skills necessary to be successful in their own lives.

I have been able to significantly contribute to the practice in the field by volunteering as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism (JCEU). Contributing to the publication of original research helps students and professionals learn about cutting-edge research in the field, thereby contributing to efficacy in their daily practice. I also serve as the president University of Manitoba Civil Engineering Graduate Students Association. It is valuable to invest in the future of civil engineering by providing students with informational sessions and other formal events that contribute to their professional development. Last, I continue to serve as an active member of the Red Cross Society in Iran, specifically by helping raise money for search and rescue efforts related to the Varzghan earthquake in 2012. As a professional, I recognize that my responsibility is not only to myself and to my field, but to others as well. I therefore practice in a manner that emphasizes the importance of the local and world community. Acting with humility is necessary to view the broader picture and determine how we can focus our efforts to help others.
