Hydro-Geologist Report Grammar Corrections, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 302

Essay

Microsoft Word 2010 was used to make spelling and grammar corrections to the hydro-geologist report; here is a summary of the findings:

Examination of the initial document using the spell check feature in Microsoft Word allowed for spelling errors to be corrected and several grammatical errors were detected, such as compound word corrections, use of an apostrophe, use of “is” versus “are”, “to” versus “too” and “its” versus “it’s”.  However, spell and grammar checker should not be used in place of proofreading and manual editing because it is not always the best option to implement all of the changes suggested.  The spell checker is a function of the programming used to create it, and the grammatical suggestions do not always reflect accurate use of the word for the sentence context.  Also, spelling errors may not accurately reflect the scientific, medical, or other technical terminology being used since it relies on the dictionary with which it is programmed.  The second document that has been edited according to all of the suggestions made by the spelling and grammar checker has left significant errors in its wake, although no errors have been flagged.  The first sentence reads awkwardly because of the incorrect use of the word “is.” The best thing to do when using these features is to examine the suggested changes within the context of the sentence and add technical terms to the dictionary so they are not flagged as misspelled words when you check your spelling.

The Thesaurus is helpful when searching for synonyms of commonly used words or phrases; however, it does not offer a large selection of options and oftentimes will have no suggestions for more complicated words that are not commonly used. In the event that no options are offered, one can access the Thesaurus.com button and look for more options online.
