- Dr. Train was hypothesizing that the consumption of milk fat increases intelligence.
- The independent variable in this experiment is the type of milk that was used for each group as designated by Dr. Train. The four types of milk used were homogenized milk or 3% milk fat, milk with 2% milk fat, milk with 1% milk fat, and skim milk.
- Each group was assigned a particular type of milk to drink from. They were instructed to drink three, 8-ounce glasses of milk for exactly 30 days.
- The dependent variable in this experiment is the increase in intelligence within each individual person.
- The operational definition of the experiment was taken from Dr. Train’s assistant, Kenny, submitting each test subject to the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test. Once the subjects were finished with the tests, they were graded by Kenny and statistically-analyzed.
- There are three experimental groups in this scenario. These three groups were given milk with 3% milk fat, 2% milk fat, and 1% milk fat, respectively.
- The control group in this experiment was the group of individuals that was required to drink skim milk because this type of milk does not contain milk fat.
- Dr. Train could have performed other tasks to ensure that the groups were assigned randomly. The groups could have been assigned by having each subject choose a number out of a hat, which stood for the number of the group that the subjects were to be assigned. This is one simple task that the researchers would have no control over which subjects were assigned to particular groups.
- Dr. Train performed random group assignment by assigning a period of months to each group. If the subject’s birthday fell into a specific grouping of months, they were assigned to that group. These groups included January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December.
- The original hypothesis was not supported. The results from the Stanford-Binet tests indicated statistics that showed that individuals that consumed milk fat scored a higher intelligence level than those subjects that did not consume milk fat. However, the researchers did not have the subjects take the Stanford-Binet tests prior to consuming milk. These scores would have been crucial to showing statistical analysis that individuals actually had an increase in intelligence level. Due to random group assignment, individuals in the milk fat groups may have randomly had naturally higher levels of intelligence than those subjects in the non-milk fat group. These results are flimsy, at best, and do not support nor refute the original hypothesis.
