Essay

In the United States, clinical procedures are classified under ICD 10-PCS. ICD 10-PCS refers to publicly published categories of all the hospital procedures used on inpatients in a healthy setting (Boyd et al., 2018). The classification uses both digits and alphabets as follows: 0 represents all medical procedures done on medical and surgical procedures (Boyd et al., 2018). 1 represents all medical procedures done on obstetrics (Boyd et al., 2018). 2 represents all medical procedures done on placement (Hernandez-Ibarburu et al., 2019). 3 represents administration. 4 stands for measurement and monitoring. 5 represents all medical procedures done on systematic assistance and performance (Hernandez-Ibarburu et al., 2019). 6 represents all medical procedures done on systematic therapies (Hernandez-Ibarburu et al., 2019). 7 represents Osteopathic. 8 represents other or general procedures. 9 represents all medical procedures done on chiropractic (Hernandez-Ibarburu et al., 2019). B is for imaging. C is for nuclear medicine. D is for radiation therapy. F represents all medical procedures done on physical rehabilitation, as well as diagnostic audiology. G represents procedures on mental health. H is for treatment procedures regarding to substance abuse. Therefore, the right ICD-10-PCS code to be used for this procedure is 0 Medical and Surgical- B3.8 Resection.

The Rationale of B3.8 Resection

The procedure in the case study involves exclusion right below the knee. Resection applies in situations where a body part is cut off as opposed to excision where apart of the body is detached. Therefore in the given procedure, an amputation procedure was done just below the knee and because this is a major surgery it will be coded under 0 Medical and Surgical

Further because the the procedure entails removal of a body part just below the knee which would require transecting the fibula and amputation by making an incision on the posterior musculature, it will be coded under B3.8 Resection in the ICD-10-PCS.
