First of all, the executive branch of American government is represented by the President of the United States, who is at the same time the head of state, Commander-in-Chief of US armed forces, chief diplomat, and chief of party. It is the President’s duty to enforce the laws drawn up by Congress. The President is assisted by the Vice President, who must perform the President’s functions if the President appears temporarily unable to do so. Barack H. Obama is the current and 44^th President of the United States, and Joseph R. Biden is the Vice President.

In general, the executive branch of federal government is an organization consisting of approximately 4 million people, including active-duty military people (1 million).

Congress organizes federal executive departments, and the President appoints their heads. The 15 heads of federal department compose the President’s Cabinet.
