Identifying, Constructing, and Evaluating Arguments, Essay Example

Identifying, constructing, and evaluating arguments are integral components of critical thinking and retain a variety of uses and appropriations in the academic, professional, and personal world. People engage in arguments and debates on a quotidian basis, and they rely on facts and logic to underscore the validity of their postulation. Within the realm of critical thinking, making an argument requires and individual to create a list of statements that are comprised of assumptions and premises as well as a conclusion. The premises are articulated in order to convince others that the conclusion is acceptable. Sound writing and research are predicated on the ability to articulate a strong and coherent argument about a piece of literature or historical subject. Many times within the professional world, colleagues disagree on a business decisions or what recourse to take when a company or employee makes a mistake. Making an argument thus is an important critical thinking skill that must be honed at an early age in order for people to succeed later on in life. Developing the habit of making strong argument is important for improving critical thinking skills, and personal opinions thereby become more valid. As I have practiced developing strong arguments more and more I have increasingly taken into account potential objections to my opinion. Doing so adds nuance to my argument and/or opinion, which has profoundly impacted my critical thinking skills.
