Immigrants and Jacksonian America, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 270

Essay

The Jacksonian era in American history is a very important time span in the development of the current multicultural societies that are found throughout the United States. Inspired by the rise of Jackson from backwoods local to President helped to inspire the nation, leading to a boom in economic prosperity across many areas. The story of these developments also served as motivation for a dramatic rise in immigration, leading to social issues along with associated benefits.

The rise of industry and low land costs proved to be attractive enough to draw immigrants from around the world, though most came from western Europe. In total, it is estimated that over five million people immigrated to America during the Jacksonian era (Pessen, 1985). Industrially, the rise in population bolstered the economy and contributed to an explosion in available markets. However, there was also a strong effect on public opinion, as Americans became polarized over the rights of specific classes versus the entire population.

Social unrest during the mass migration was mirrored by political stances. The Democratic and Whig parties represented opposing perspectives, with the Democrats preferring the egalitarian inclusion of immigrants as opposed to segregation. This support allowed the new population to continue contributing to the economic revolution that they had, at least in part, created. Unfortunately thought expectedly the immigrants were still often met with discrimination and harassment that caused irrevocable psychological, economic, and physical damage to their communities. The unrest about immigration forced the government to enact official policies, demonstrating that the influx was important enough to warrant administrative actions.
