The purpose of this posting is to discuss a nurse’s scope of practice as outlined by the American Nurses Association (ANA).. The scope of practice of registered nurses depends on a nurse’s basic education combined with specialized training. It is sometimes unclear who to turn to when registered nurses are dubious about the scope of practice. Indeed, employers, collaborating doctors, professional associations, Medicare providers, insurance carriers, and nurse practice acts all play critical roles in the definition of a nurse’s scope of practice regarding nurses’ agency in healthcare settings (“Determining Scope,” N.d.). Each state addresses scope of practice questions on a varied and idiosyncratic basis, although core principles traverse all boundaries of practice.
The scope of nursing practice varies on an idiosyncratic basis according to state regulations, and clearly delineates nurses’ scope of practice in various healthcare policies. Nurses are responsible for both indirect and direct patient care services to guarantee the comfort, safety, protection, and personal hygiene in addition to restorative measures and the prevention of disease. California’s Medical Practice Act authorizes nurses to diagnose physical and mental conditions, the utilize drugs upon or in patients, to deal with human tissues in a variety of ways, and the deployment of alternative methods to treat various maladies, deformities, injuries, and mental and physical conditions (Nursing Practice Act, 2014). RNs, unlike physicians, must use a standardized procedure, although the activities therein have been common nursing practices so generally do not require standardized protocols. The state of California articulates a broad yet all-inclusive definition in which the practice of nursing by RNs include basic health care to assist patients in coping with the vagaries and difficulties they confront on a quotidian basis that correlate with their potential or actual maladies or health issues. Treatment may necessitate a vast quantity of technical skills and scientific knowledge. RNs must acknowledge that it is a common nursing practice to apply three specific nursing functions and does not mandate any standardized procedure. The three types of nursing functions of RNs include: Dependent, independent, and interdependent functions.
Scenarios elucidate how a registered nurse’s scope of practice has been implemented, or lack thereof. An RN named Anna started a new job at a new facility. Her precept is working to orient her to the available resources on the intranet within the office. She demonstrates how RNs can access standardized care plans predicated on the diagnosis give by a nurse and discerns which ones in the unit are utilized the most. The preceptor instructs Anna to choose the most appropriate care plan and put in the patient’s medical record. The preceptor states that that is all registered nurses do for care plans. The aforementioned practice fails to meet ANA Standards, as it violates the third standard which states that RNs must identify any and all expected outcomes for a patient’s individualized plan for the consumer or a certain situation. Moreover, RN competencies require them to define expected outcomes and modify them if the healthcare status of the patient changes.
