Impact of Lifelong Learning for a Future Nurse, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 314

Essay

A health teacher once told me in grade school that learning begins before you are born and never ends. Life long learning is a fact of human existence, but it is even more so for some people – particularly those with careers in healthcare. As a future nurse, I recognize the paramount importance of conscientiously developing my lifelong learning skills with respect to my chosen profession.

I realize that learning for me is now about building the knowledge to continue improving my skill as a nurse. Some of what I am learning for my career will be in the classroom, but much of what I can apply to nursing will come from the nursing experiences I will have over the course of my life. A measure of this will come from colleagues. Some will come from the patients I will work with, and still more will come from medical research professionals and nursing organizations.

The challenges of the hospital floor will help me absorb and organize new information in my daily job duties. As I do, so I will be. It is interesting to note that given the opportunity to see myself in action ten years from now, I probably would hardly recognize myself in terms of my level of expertise. This vision alone is sufficient to fuel my motivation to learn all I can about being a good nurse. Nevertheless, it is not the only thing.

I want to be a good nurse, because I want to help people. There is a certain humility that comes with the bedside. As you see someone in need, there is something sacramental about helping them heal. In order to be a good healer, you have to know what you are doing. Granted, medical practitioners do not know everything. Everyday knew discoveries are made. The point is, to be effectively proficient; we must commit ourselves to a life of erudition.
