Improving Reading Comprehension Through Cooperative Learning

In the article entitled “Improving Reading Comprehension through Cooperative Learning” (2003), Tracey Caposey and Barbara Heider provide case evidence for the best methodof edifying children who have trouble identifying the content area of their reading texts. Students from two grade levels were observed: grade level 4 in elementary school and grade level 7 from junior high school.

Reading comprehension is a fundamental academic skill.Deficits in the student’s abilities to retain vocabulary, transfer of cooperative learning and transfer of skills obtained from reading to the subject of content areas were observed in a large portion of the student body. Once the deficit was recognized, this prompted the need for further analysis of this behavior and cognitive deficits before offering recommended course of action and its corrective measures toward the proper edification of these children.

The solution was then proffered by the conductors of these studies after consult with trained educational professionals. As a result, the following solution was drafted. Reading comprehensive questions followed all stories read; the analyses included cooperative learning techniques.
