Title: “E.P.A. Turns Down Request to Ban Lead Bullets”
Author: Falicity Barringer
URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/31/science/earth/31brfs-EPATURNSDOWN_BRF.html?ref=earth
Summary & Relevance
In lecture I learned the significance and relevance of bio-diversity. Bio-diversity is a variety of living organisms with in a community. It was render speechless learning how one living organism is dependent on another and disrupting and/or manipulating any of the organisms may cause a devastating domino effect on our environment. Many people ignore this legitimacy due to simple ignorance. Professor Wong really made this concept logical, through his Deer and Wolf example. The Barringer article states how human’s toxic bullets fumes are hurting the bio-diversity. In efforts to stop the destruction, the Environmental Protection Agency has tried to put a stop, however has failed to do so. Involved in this controversial matter are The American Bird Conservancy and the Center for Biological Diversity which all together are pleading to have these toxic fumes impede.
Questions
Is it possible to have non toxic bullets, if so what stopping banding the toxic ones?
It is evident that toxic bullets have created significant problems for today’s environment in many harmful ways. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an understanding of the options that are available as feasible alternatives to these products. It is believed that there are a number of non-toxic options that are currently under further investigation by industry experts, but that these alternatives are not necessarily the most optimal choices to improve cost effectiveness (Barsness, 2009). Since bio-diversity is so fragile in modern society, it is essential to consider how non-toxic bullets might be effective in serving the same purpose as their toxic counterparts (Barsness, 2009). Therefore, the primary reason that toxic bullets continue to be the most popular choice is their cost effectiveness and accessibility, as well as their ease in use (Barsness, 2009).
Article Summary: The article addresses the popularity of bullets that are known to possess toxic side effects, and why these are the most popular choice (Barsness, 2009). This is an important distinction to consider, because there are considerable challenges involved in the development of non-toxic bullets, such as cost and effectiveness (Barsness, 2009). Therefore, it is essential to also consider that toxic bullets are the most optimal choice, despite their dangers and consequences (Barsness, 2009).
Which organisms are primarily being affected by toxic fumes?
Toxic fumes necessitate an understanding of the organisms that are often harmed by these chemicals when they are released into the atmosphere. As a result, human beings in some cases, particularly when they face existing respiratory problems, are at a higher risk of developing these problems over time (Douglas, 2005). For those with asthma, there is a greater risk of problems related to the inhalation of toxic fumes, and therefore, necessitates an understanding of workplace environments where these toxins are known to be common (Douglas, 2005). Those facing asthma as a result of work-related conditions are often more symptomatic than other persons, and often face other circumstances that are directly impacted by toxic fumes in varying degrees (Douglas, 2005).
Therefore, humans face toxic fume inhalation problems more than others, especially when they possess weakened lung function or activity from other sources (Douglas, 2005).
Article summary: The article addresses how human beings are subject to possible respiratory harm when they are exposed to toxic fumes in the workplace (Douglas, 2005). This is important because if they already possess asthma or a similar condition, they are likely to exacerbate their symptoms at an even greater level (Douglas, 2005). Therefore, toxic fumes of any kind may be highly detrimental to an individual with an already compromised respiratory system (Douglas, 2005).
Required Knowledge
- I would need to find out whether there are eco friendly bullets.
- I would need to actually need studies where the measures bio-diversity before and after gun powder release, in order to find which organisms are being hurt the most.
