World War II (WW II) had numerous consequences on the Native American people. Various communities who were brought to participate in the war found themselves in a new country most notable are the Africans and the Indians. This was the beginning of the identity of the American Indian residents. These Indians faced a lot of segregation during the previous war period and most tried moving to the urban settings due to their experience during the war.

The war experience and the terrible situation in the reservations made the migration to the urban areas permanently inevitable for a sizeable number of Indians. This was in the believe that the city would provide better living conditions, exemption from unemployment and underemployment. This happened despite the fact that several Indians had no formal education and their desire for a better life was never that easy.

The American government on noticing the desperation of American Indians had to make efforts to assist them. The government tried to assimilate them through new policies, which could incorporate them into popular culture. The Bureau of Indian Affairs offered a voluntary program to the urban setting and metropolitan areas. The Bureau assisted them find homes and employment though with difficult. The Indians felt unfit for these areas because of hard life, discrimination, being homesick and separation from their culture. The Indian community had to adjust to the new environment, culture, and hardships in the urban areas. They created inter- tribal, Indian community to face the adjustment and integration and resulted in the identity of urban American Indians.

The assimilation process of American Indians came with various challenges. There were criticisms on funds allocated for this process as well as the cultural setbacks it attracted. Indians grouped themselves to form organizations, which gathered for their interest.
