To address this educational gap and foster infant safe sleep practices in the community, a partnership was established between an area women’s and children’s hospital and faculty from the local university nursing program. Unsafe infant sleeping practices had been observed by university faculty during clinical rotations with nursing students despite having hospital-wide infant safe sleep policies and protocols in place.

Data Collection
- Describe the data collection procedures described in the study. Include who collected the data, at what time points, and how data was collected. Evaluate how clearly and completely the procedures were described.
The data collection methods involved one on one interviews with the sample selected for the study. Phase I of the study consisted of the newly trained Simulation Education Champions” conducting the SBLEs with nurses from their respective units. In collaboration with unit leaders, the simulation educators scheduled simulated scenario sessions to accommodate all the nurse team members from the various departments. Study investigators were available to the champions if needed. When the SBLEs were conducted, a cognitive multiple-choice test to measure the participants’ knowledge regarding safe sleep practices was administered immediately before and after each scenario session.
- If more than one data collector was used for the study, describe the training of the data collectors and how/whether interrater reliability was adequately assessed.
The training for the data collectors involved oral skills on how to relate with employees working in hospitals, especially nurses. Here skills involving interaction were tested and sharpened to ensure the right sourcing of information from the sample. In addition, the reliability of the sample testers was checked, and the quality was rated high.
Data Analysis
- List the statistical procedures performed to describe the sample or demographic variables.
The statistical procedures include the Analysis of variance, Chi-square tests, Correlation, Factor analysis, Mean square weighted, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and Regression analysis.
- List the statistical procedures performed to answer the research question(s) or main study variables.
They include variance analysis, a measure of dispersion, regression analysis, correlation analysis and factor analysis.
- Discuss the appropriateness of the statistical procedures for the level of measurement of the data collected. Utilize the statistical decision tree in the textbook, Chapter 21, Fig.21.7.
The statistical procedures came in handy in measuring the data collected to help assess the quality of the data collected in relation to the study. In addition, the procedures helped analyze the characteristics associated with the data and the importance of the data collected.
- Describe how the researcher(s) addressed any problems with missing data if they did.
Problems associated with missing data were handled through general assumptions guided by the trend described by the data. The sample information collected by the researchers showed quite strong characteristics portrayed by the sample that it was easy to assume missing data depending on the nature of the prevailing data.
- Describe the level of significance (alpha) set for this study.
The significance set was quite high due to the requirements of the study objectives. Here, the sample characteristics were keenly observed, and information was noted beside expected characteristics or information based on individuals’ expected treatment by the samples set aside.
- Discuss the clarity of the presentation of study results (e.g., if tables or figures were used, clear description, etc.).
On the results of the study, the presentation done was superb. The results presentation entailed a detailed description of the data collected and a correlation with the expected outcomes. Every aspect of statistics was explored during this presentation, especially the correct use of percentages and standard deviations to differentiate different results associated with the study.
Researcher Interpretation of Findings
- Describe the key findings of the study about the purpose statement or hypotheses.
The study’s key findings include different types of performances by different nurses depending on their employment experience and their roles. In addition, different nurses express different levels of effectiveness, with the highest level portrayed by more experienced nurses in the pediatrician section and the lowest by the newly employed.
- Evaluate the clarity of the authors’ explanation of key findings, including statistically significant & non-significant findings.
The authors’ clarity in the key findings is expressed in the detailed explanations of the data collected, with the analysis running on every section described differently. The clarity of the findings described is high, as portrayed in the discussion on the findings from the study where the hypotheses for the study were being tested.
- Discuss whether the key findings were clinically significant or clinically important.
The findings from the study were clinically important due to the relevance of the study for the clinical care of patients. Furthermore, the findings were important for describing the nature of services rendered by different individuals in the employment sector and a solution to be presented in case of upcoming problems.
- Describe which findings were consistent with those expected and any which were unexpected in your opinion.
The findings from the study were slightly consistent with the expected since the results were expected to be uniform for all the job description samples selected for the study.
- Describe the implications for practice identified by the authors.
For practice the implications identified play in in terms of the hospital context, licensed nurses who serve as role models for parents and caregivers by demonstrating baby safe sleep recommendations and recognizing and correcting unsafe sleep practices and behaviors have a clear need to improve their knowledge and understanding of best practices.
- Summarize the suggestions for future studies (research) identified by the authors.
For future studies, a broad set of samples was suggested to attain quality information since this particular study narrowly focused on Caucasian females.
Overall Evaluation of the Entire Study
- Discuss two strengths of the study.
The strengths of the study entail a quality in the findings collected from the sample. This was ensured by having a controlled sample to collect all the necessary information from. The second strength of the study is the descriptive nature expressed by the author. This helped in portraying important information on the study.
- Discuss two weaknesses of the study and how each weakness could have been corrected. Reliance on a specific sample for the study. This can be easily corrected by broadening the scope.
The study’s weaknesses include using a single location and convenient, non-randomized sample; thus, causality cannot be determined because other variables may have influenced the study’s results. A significant percentage of individuals did not finish the study’s second phase. Phase I testing was done in cooperation with the SBLE, while phase II testing was done at the discretion of the different unit managers. This kind of testing may have resulted in less participation in phase II. Furthermore, because baseline demographics were only collected for phase II participants, it could not compare the two groups.
- Based on the previous research presented in the literature review and the study’s findings presented in this article, discuss whether the findings are ready for use in practice.
The findings from the study are ready for use in practice since the findings portrayed a crucial aspect and characteristic of the employed nurses that require correction in practice. In addition, the findings are also ready for use in practice since the sample represented a greater percentage of the other employees, which implies that more damage could be done if changes were ignored.
