Definitively, a database is a procedural resource utilized for storing information and data in technique or method that makes it easy to such a way that information can be retrieved from it. This typically means that a database simplyrepresents a source for heterogeneous but correlated bits or fragments of data or information. Usually, a database entails more than a single table that contains organized data. A database can be characterized as a simple flat file, or referred to as a distinct computer file that has denoted in a tabular format. The data in databases can comprise of telephone numbers, names email addresses, or even an elaborate and extensive demonstration of a company’s products. I totally agree with Robin Bloor’s claim that the rise of Object Technology and the Need for the Hybrid Database is a dominant approach in current software database development approaches (Bloor, 2003).
This paper focuses on the tradeoffs between relational and object-oriented database management systems by giving a definite comparison. This will help in giving brilliant explanations that outline some of the positive reasons as to why there is an amplified use of hybrid databases and object-oriented technology. In the entire cases described for ORDBMSs, there exist a number of limitations that software developers are supposed to conscious about when it comes to considering the user-defined data types. For instance, the assembled data types cannot be directly certified as abstract data types. This is because they might have to be considered as the values of the entity attributes in that particular abstract base type.
Agreeably, object-oriented technology has provided a higher performance and numerous methods to approach the design and development of the database and tables within it. The layout of a database is the most vital fragment of the information system (Bernstein & Haas, 2008). Putting more consideration on the design of a database helps in the implementation of a better database that would probably last and operate for a long time.
Conferring to the comparison between the object database management systems and the relational databases, it is depicted that there is a significant advantage that is inherently extensible. Hybrid and object-oriented database tend to run much faster, thus, giving them a higher performance feature for all its applications (Bloor, 2003). On the other hand, since relational databases have an objective to ensure data independence. Even though the use of relational database systems has contributed to the invention of database models and technology that have advanced data manipulation, they still do not solve every problem. This is because there are certain data structures that do not fit well into relations and data querying.
The relational databases do not usually let a developer define the data types while the object-oriented databases possess the key objective of encapsulation. OODBMS let you define arbitrarily complex, data types similar to their corresponding programming language being stored collectively with the methods and data (Gheorghe, 2007). It is worth noting that an OODBMS is imperative when comes to the referencing of software applications dealing with complex information or data.
The object oriented database design approach will subsequently develop an increased market share in the contemporary world; but the appreciated use of the RDMSs shared capabilities will propel the origination of hybrid database engines (Gheorghe, 2007). This would combine both the prospective capabilities of the OODBS and RDBMS that will still co-exist for a long time future. Thus, it would introduce the possibility of having a single database engine, which can retain a distinct set of data definitions suitable for all applications.
