Information System Contributions to Evidence-Based Practice, Research Paper Example

Pages: 1

Words: 298

Research Paper

The preferred evidence-based practice environment and relevant research can generate information that can reasonably be implemented into information systems. In addition, this relationship could work in the opposite direction; the information system contributions have the potential to shape practice. Ultimately, this is an important understanding because the development of quality practice is cyclical; evidence-based practice has the ability to influence information systems and information systems have the ability to influence practice (Titler, 2008).

Specifically, information systems are able to shape a preferred evidence-based practice environment by ensuring that documentation is sufficient to support the patient care process, that technology and other resources are available to support the individual needs of the patients, and that resources are monitored in a manner that ensures a fair distribution of them. Overall, information systems allow health care practitioners and administrators to act in a more organized fashion, which contributes to better patient outcomes.

Continued use of these information systems is a beneficial practice because it allows health care professionals to gain an enhanced understanding of the system, which will enable them to refine their technological practices in a manner that will better support the needs of their patients. As technology evolves, it appears that it will be more able to contribute to the enhancement of health care through evidence-based practice (Stevens, 2013). Understanding these systems is important because they will act as an important ally in the future of health care, helping nurses and other professionals approach practice with a higher degree of quality.
