Crime prevention Through Environmental Design process is based on the belief that crime can be directly related to the design of the physical environment. (Source Security, n.d) CPTED is used to prevent crime by following three key physical securities. Natural surveillance a tool used to increase the apprehension in potential criminals in order to give the intentions that they could be seen. By changing the line of the site and creating an open space for social interactions, visibility, and the use of CCTV surveillance cameras to deter criminals. Natural access control is another physical security implemented by CPTED, useful in differentiating open spaces by blocking of entry ways, and exits by putting up fencing and designated a singular exit and entry way. Territoriality is the last physical security of CPTED, creates ownership reinforcement by detailing private and public spacing. These tactics make the owner feel a sense of safety and take pride in protecting their buildings and surroundings.
Physical security encompasses more than just bolts and locks, another layer of criminal behavior is cybercrime. People and companies use the internet every day to send emails, upload important documents, online shopping, using personal information and interacting online. These cyber transactions have left the door open for criminal trespass. With much policy making geared towards tightening internet security, CPTED can be used in a variety of situations in all environments to help curb criminal behavior. Ways that cybercrime can be added to information system environmental design is by designing the framework of the websites to block and alert unauthorized access. Creating a more secure network by blocking off entrances to the website deemed private. Creating a social atmosphere that promotes interaction and maximizes visibility of possible intruders. Other ways to include cybercrime is by designers to create territorial reinforcements by website owners providing the proper maintenance and image upkeep that makes the website undesirable for criminals.
CPTED requires physical changes to prevent crime, however, no studies have proven that environment changes alone help deter crime, but believe to help change the criminal behavior. When devising plans and policies to counteract these attacks the premise using measures that will durable and effective in preventing cybercrime. Just focusing on cybercrime prevention alone will not solve the problems. Other ways that cybercrime can be prevented is by routinely updating software and maintenance checkups to computer systems. Not only will help externally, but being up to date with security measures will help in preventing criminal acts. Inputting firewalls, up to date software, and other security measures help curb crime. However, improving the environment makes a significant difference as well; by “designing out crime” it will help deter criminals. (PSU, n.d)
