Integrating Spirituality, Research Paper Example

Pages: 1

Research Paper

Family therapy mainly focuses on family relationships and takes place within the family in the hands of a family therapist (Maione, & Chenail, 1999). The therapist helps the family to identify the ways in which individual and relationship problems occur and help the family to find constructive ways to solve them.

Family therapists work to give credit to the status of people’s families and other relationships, sharing and respecting individuals’ different perspectives, beliefs, views and stories, and exploring possible ways of going forward. Therefore integration of spirituality with family therapy will serve as a powerful dimension of human experience that goes beyond basic life to exploring the inner meaning of life and its relationship with the increasing diversity of today’s changing world (Maione, & Chenail, 1999).

In helping families find solutions to their problems Family therapists work in ways that give credit to the status of people’s families and other relationships. Individuals are thus empowered in sharing and respecting different perspectives, beliefs, views and stories, and exploring possible ways of going forward.

Psychology perspective trends show that spirituality is important because it offers an overabundance of choices for individuals who may be tired and abused by traditional religious norms and beliefs thus integrating it in therapeutic relationships are important in elevating life (Maione, & Chenail, 1999).

Evidence from family values debate states that Christians and non-Christians alike share in-depth engrained vales about the nature of the family. This debate demonstrates that Christians have greater commitment to permanence of marriage, the significance of family for childbearing, and the maintenance of family heterosexual norms than non- Christians. However it should not be concluded that non-Christians don’t adhere to family values similar to Christians. Thus spirituality in a family boosts therapeutic relationships. (Nelson, Johnson, & Schwaille, 2007).

It is evident from the above argument that integrating family therapy with spirituality will lead to better human experience. Basically spiritual integration to therapy is essential for both religious and non-religious people and therefore serves as important source for seeking transcendence that brings human satisfaction.
