Area and Style

Homes are the place where people feel the most at peace and calm, which is why the client would like to have work done on the living room. She requested that it be modeled into a space inspired by Zen to amplify feelings of serenity and calmness in her home. This work will require a complete remodeling of the room and the purchase of new furniture, paint for the walls, shelving, furniture, and other items. The room will be inspired by a Japanese style of interior design and draw inspiration from Japanese Zen gardens and adapted to modern contingencies.   Ultimately, Zen interior design emphasizes being in tune with nature as well as the world. This living room is used for family dinners and as a quiet place where the client likes to study. However, she feels that her family has turned it into an entertainment room, which is why redesign is requested due to the fact that her children are moving out of the home soon. She enjoys having guests over and sharing meals and having conversations in the room. 

Requirements and actions

The client has inquired for a list of actions she would like the interior designer to take, including new paint colors, flooring, furniture, space planning, accessories, lighting, and window treatment. All of the changes would be made to reduce the clutter and style the room in a way that is more contemporary. In order to enhance the serenity of the room, all electronic devices, including the television, desktop, and the land line telephone, would be permanently removed. The client has a budget of $20,000, which is quite low for the requested changes but will suffice for the requested redesign since Zen-inspired interior design underscores minimalism and balance rather than cluttered furniture and design. After showing the client different possible schemes, we made a list of the desired materials, shelving, wall paint colors, and furniture for the room to suit her primary interests.  The walls will largely be kept bare, so the artwork that lacks synchronization with the space as discussed in the redesign will be removed. Smooth, flat paint will be used to finish the walls rather than wallpaper. Natural colored  carpeting will also be used. Because Zen interior design focuses on uniting nature and the indoors, the decor will be used from natural materials. Artificial lighting will be largely removed per the client’s request, so appropriating natural light into this living space will be crucial in fusing the indoors and outdoors while maintaining a sense of balance and calmness as requested. 

The client inquired that the high table and chair set be disposed of, opting for floor cushions and low table to replace them in order to create a more oriental-style dining area. She also requested high contrast wood that is of a darker hue as a contrast to a cream backdrop in order to cultivate a soothing feeling. She vacillated between floor pillows and opting for slightly elevated, low seating in order to make it easier for people’s backs and knees when seated than the pillows. Moreover, it worked better in formal settings, which she is taking into consideration. The client also requested dark shelving that would be placed at the edges of the room’s wall column in order to emulate the silhouette of a Japanese structure known as a pagoda. Minimalistic lines would accentuate the influence of Japanese interior design on contemporary spaces, thereby creating a sense of balance that is so characteristic of a Zen-inspired styled home. Bringing in paper paneled doors installed in doubles and painted a warm cream color would further evoke a Japanese style, Zen appearance. Natural materials will be key in this scheme, and incorporating a Zen garden using Bonsai trees, pebbles, bamboo, green fronds, and twisted trees will be ideal for this interior living room. Such a design evokes a sense of calmness and play well with the desired color palette, which is inspired by nature itself.   

Initial Stage and Conceptual Phase

The designer will consult with the client to ascertain the needs and requests of the client and help prepare the budget for the redesign, which is $20,000. The client agreed to pay the designer on an hourly basis at the rate of $100/hour unless and amendment is made through email or in writing. The designer agreed to deliver an honest estimate of expected hours needed for the completion of this project. Hourly fees will be invoiced monthly to the client, and the client will have a month or thirty days to pay the fee. The designer also will figure out the space allocation necessities and how to use the space effectively according to the design concept and proper function. Several meetings will take place prior to the designer creating drawings and plans for the redesign where discussion about how sketches of the floor plans and fixtures will be developed during the process. 

Design and Development

The designer will commence creating concrete drawings and plans based on the feedback given by the client. The designer will prepare developmental drawings that need to be approved by the client for the scope and character of the redesign. Illustrations will also be made of the decor, furniture, and other appropriate items or elements in order to mirror final appearance and functional operations. Color recommendations will also be made in additional to materials and finishes If any, the designer will discuss with the client any adjustments that need to be made to the estimated total cost of the redesign .Once approved by the client, bidding and negotiation for contracts on furniture, equipment, and furnishings will take place. Bidding is only carried out by the designer. 

Contact administration 

The designer guarantees full assistance and cooperation in making sure the design project progresses. The designer helps procure competitive bids for all merchandise, and he or she will help the client figure out scheduling for delivery and pick up of all equipment. The installation of furniture and other items will be supervised by the designer. Collaboration is key in this final stage.
