Introduction

The issue of international co-operation is a very weighty issue that has been an agenda in many international meetings. The protagonists’ for this move believe that issues affecting the international community like hunger, insecurity, wars, economic sanctions will be best tackled using these method. Whilst their argument seems very reasonable, the challenge has been on implementation.

The first challenge is that of mistrust among the nations of the world. There exists a lot of animosity and ill feelings among nations for various reasons. The major being feeling that co-operation will benefit some countries more than others will. Secondly wars between and among various countries greatly hampers this co-operation. Wars exist from as low as between two neighboring countries, two regions and even between the eastern and western blocks! Another issue is that of trade barriers that exist between various countries of the world. This are meant to generate revenue and avoid entrance of illegal goods into their territories. Whilst it remains a valid reason, it has been cited as one of the greatest barriers to trade and ultimately international co-operation. Additionally a difference in legislation systems and legal frameworks is yet another barrier that the international community has to contend with. Laws have been known to be very different even in nations that are united like USA and UAE. Finally yet importantly differences in culture, religion and social set ups make international co-operation very hard.

It is this and more other reasons that make me feel strongly that the dream for international co-operation is a bad dream – it can never exist. Unless something unique happens we may never realize a fully and working co-operation. Transportation especially across the borders is faced with many challenges making entry and exit from one country to the other a nightmare. Reasons for restrictions include security, refugee, and entry of illegal goods just to mention but a few. There is need to place on the table all security measures by all nations. This is the beginning point because security is one of the major issues in international co-operation.
