Investing in Cardio Technology, Research Paper Example

If there is any uniformly shared perception within the Cleveland Clinic Board, and within the Clinic itself, it is that growth today translates to survival in the competitive arena of providers.  It is in which directions this growth should be pursued that debate arises, not unexpectedly, as the Clinic’s multiple facilities and department believe – and rightly so – that they be focused upon in terms of investment and expansion.  However, and as CEO Dr. Cosgrove so aptly expressed it, the Clinic cannot excel in every service (Porter, Teisberg).  This being the reality, and with the necessary acknowledgment of limited funding and resources, it is the Board’s determination that the cardiology department be focused upon in investment terms.

While we comprehend how vital the Clinic’s various departments are, we feel as well that cardiology warrants this approach primarily because so much in the way of advances in technology are centered on the field. There can be no overstating of the potential and beneficial impact of such a strategy, as it also carries on – and enhances – the Clinic’s history of leadership in cardiovascular care.  When, in the late 1960s, Dr. Favalaro pioneered coronary artery bypass surgery here, the Clinic attracted international attention. Then, the Clinic has maintained a reputation of attracting leading cardiologists from other hospitals (Porter, Teisberg); equipped with the best technology, we then may be assured of doing so in the future.  Such an agenda would as well conform to, and enhance, the Clinic’s trajectory of adopting state-of-the-art technologies in health care, well in evidence since the 1990s (Porter, Teisberg).

In reaching this determination, the Board also is confident that the investment in cardiology must translate to increased opportunities for the Clinic as a whole.  There is no escaping the reality that public interest is typically focused upon heart research and care.  As the Clinic then will represent the latest techniques and utilize the most modern equipment, it is highly probable that the ensuing publicity will advance the interests of all departments.  In promoting cardiology, then, the Clinic will accomplish the dual objectives of enhancing that practice to the utmost and reinforcing the Clinic’s standing in general.
