What the word “sport” brings to mind is swimming, fishing, riding, shooting, boxing, jumping, gymnastics, football, hockey and other physical exertions that people indulge in. A sport is therefore a physical activity that involves an element of skill which provides amusement. Initially, sport was for recreation. It has since then been developed with high-tech facilities and has become ultra-modern.
People participate in sports in different ways. Some prefer to watch sport games, read stories about sportsmen or listen to sports news while others prefer to be sportsmen. It can be termed as a waste of time to just sit back and watch a football match for ninety minutes or a waste of money to pay a ticket to attend a rugby match in town. One might even wonder why bother watch or even attend these sports events if the sports men are neither relatives nor friends. The time spent watching people make money could be spent elsewhere making money instead or doing something worthwhile. For those who take part in sports just for leisure, unlike the professional sportsmen, it would also seem like a waste of time to play for no money.
On the other hand, sports could be seen as good pass time activity where those who find pleasure in watching sports can enjoy as much as the players. It creates a social activity that that brings different people together. For instance, football is loved by so many people in the world and the love of a certain team makes people of different ethnic backgrounds to have a common interest which brings them together. A fanatic of a certain team that plays for the country can sometimes end up buying a flight to go and watch the team play in a different country. This builds patriotism in a country. International sports events like the Olympics and world cups also promote international social interaction.
The major benefit is that it enables us to have an overall body fitness which leads to healthy bodies. We therefore protect ourselves from heart related diseases especially if we engage in high metabolic exercises. It is always wise to spend our spare time in sporting activities because it reduces the chances of adopting bad habits like smoking, taking drugs and drinking alcohol. An ideal way of developing acceptable attitudes socially is through sports because the experiences gained can be applied in real life situations. A sporting activity enables the mind to release aggression and energy.
It always looks like a good thing when sportspeople become famous but it turns bad when a person’s privacy is interfered by his celebrity status. Too much concentration on sports may also make one neglect other important aspects of life like education and family. This could occur when a dedicated sportsman has to travel to different countries or gets a contract away from home that he lacks enough time to spend with his family. A sportsperson who does not manage to balance sport and his family or even education should therefore learn to prioritize between these issues and determine what really matters in his or her life.
Some people have taken sports to a level of professionalism and this has become very popular in the world today. It has become a career like any other and sportspeople have been able to earn a living through sports such that some of them can be ranked to be among the top-earners in the world today. It has therefore been one of those jobs that the employees give their best because they enjoy doing because it is hobby inform of a job. Sportspeople are also exposed to injuries and sometimes it becomes serious especially if they end up being permanently handicapped. This is the most dangerous thing about sport because both the armatures and professionals are exposed to the risk of injuries while engaging in sports which can result to very serious injuries. Having looked at both sides of the coin, it can be concluded that sport is good for us because benefits us more than it harms us.
