Essay

Rex Sorgatz proposes that we’ve experienced three different stages in the digital era: surfing, drowning, diving. Each stage represents the way consumer behavior reacts to information on the digital platform. Sorgatz says that surfing began in the 80’s and allowed users to channel surf and be inundated with various information at a fast-paced rate. Sorgatz says of drowning that “we were sinking in the seas of content” because of all of the information now available to us (news channels, digital content, etc.). Surfing us making sense of the digital platform and trying to focus on how to incorporate it into our lives. We are in the age where binge watching is appropriate; dedicating a whole day or a weekend to follow one story line isn’t something that’s considered deviant but something that is normal. And we’ve had 34 years preparing for this according to Sorgatz’s timeline. I think that content and archives on the internet allow us to be transparent as a culture and to remember what happened yesterday. This is important since the news is going so fast and people tend to forget what happened days before or even the other hour because they’re so inundated by information. Information takes time to process; internet archives like YouTube allow us to think more about the future if we know that the past will never get deleted.
